Help us pack 8,000 shoe boxes for children in Haiti

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

As a follow-up to the disaster recovery effort 250,000 Haitian children will be given shoe box gifts by local churches and believers. Many of these children have lost their homes, loved ones, and even the few toys and possessions they held dear. We believe that God can use these simple shoe box gifts in the hands of local believers to bring them hope in their darkest hour and share the love of God in a very practical way…

Samaritan’s Purse Australia is excited to dedicate staff, resources and volunteers to prepare 8,000 of the 250,000 shoe boxes that are going to Haiti. Because of the urgency and timing of this project we are bulk purchasing suitable items to go in these boxes for each gender and age group.

Each shoe box will take approx 10 minutes to fill – so we have a task that will take 80,000 minutes (or 55 days) if one person was to do it – this is why we are asking for the assistance from you, your friends, family, church and or community groups to make a difference for 8,000 Haitian children.

When: 2nd August to 8th September 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday
Where: 41-45 Belmore Street, Ryde NSW 2112

Please contact Craig Jennings (NSW State Manager) on 1800 684 300 or email nsw@samaritanspurse.org.au to to let us know when you are coming. Groups are welcome – we can take group sizes up to 60 people at the same time. Please let us know when you are coming as there is limited space in the warehouse.

TURN ON THE TAP FOR INDONESIA

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Our Biosand water-filter program is providing clean water to poverty-stricken Indonesian families thirsting for a better way of life.

A villager at Cilacap, Central Java says: “This filter is very useful. Before using it, our water was yellowish, not fresh, and caused itching on my body. Now the water is clean, fresh – and no more itching! I can drink the water directly from the filter. I don’t need to buy drink-water anymore. Amazingly, I got cured from coughing; I usually get a cough easily.”

Thanks to the gifts of many friends in Australia and New Zealand our team was able to produce 50 filters for families in this village, home to about 700 households. The production took place at Mr. J’s house. He gratefully invited our team to stay in his home, and his wife cooked our meals during the project.

Find out how you can Turn On The Tap and provide clean, safe water to thousands!

Community Empowerment, Livelihoods and Livestock

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Samaritan’s Purse launched this program to train local women to successfully develop and run their own business, and equip them with the start-up materials they need.

The women in our Small Business Support program are enjoying great success and have a renewed sense of self esteem as a result.

  • This is a great triumph, because most of them have suffered enormous losses and have been taken advantage of. In addition, many of these women have been marginalised because Sri Lankan culture has viewed them as burdensome.
  • Through this project and through the support of friends like you, Samaritan’s Purse has reduced this negative view and today provides these women with a sustainable livelihood.

Health, HIV & AIDS

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Tragically, an estimated 5 million people in Asia were living with HIV in 2007. Around 380,000 died from AIDS-related illnesses that year, with the same number newly infected. Countless other health issues from maternity deaths to physical disabilities also affect hundreds of thousands of people each year.

Samaritan’s Purse is caring for the ill and promoting disease prevention through local grassroots organisations and churches. Our experience shows that locals know where the greatest needs are and by equipping them to offer the right health programs and facilities, change can happen…and lives like Nikki’s are changed forever!

“When Nikki first came home to live with us, she was quite ill. She had many of the hallmark symptoms associated with AIDS including diarrhoea, ear infections, nosebleeds, and an enlarged liver and spleen. She also had had a large cyst removed from the side of her head near the temple, so she was almost bald.

“Nikki was brought back to health and back to life with love and good care. She is a beautiful, vivacious child who continues to be a delight to us all.  Thank you for your gifts and prayers that enable Samaritan’s Purse to help people like Nikki.”

A SCHOOL AND WATER WELLS FOR TOUL PRASAT

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Samaritan’s Purse is helping an entire community surrounded by unexploded landmines with water wells, sanitation and a school for their children

Cambodia’s poorest children literally risk life and limb trying to walk to school through minefields in Poipet, infamous as the country’s `Wild West’.

Among the 11 villages in Poipet is one with nearly 3,000 residents called Toul Prasat. With 455 children aged 6 to 12 years, one of Toul Prasat’s biggest needs was a new school. All they had for schooling was a 2-room thatched hut, so cramped that most students had to camp on the ground outside to study and many could only attend for half the day, missing out on valuable instruction.

Since that time Samaritan’s Purse has constructed a six-room concrete schoolhouse in Toul Prasat. Each schoolroom accommodates up to 40 children and are fully furnished with blackboards, desks and chairs for teachers and desks with benches for students. We’ve also built 4 latrines nearby for school use.
As a result the new school has attracted the help of the Cambodian government, who have now provided teachers at the school.

Stories like this are made possible through the generous support and partnership of friends like you.  Thank you!
